How To Make A Flower Out Of Paper

Everyone has seen those beautiful bouquets of brightly colored paper flowers. Wouldn’t you love to make them for yourself? Happily, it is very easy to do with just a few supplies and an hour of your time.

Gather up a ruler, a good pair of scissors and a pencil from around your home. You will also need a piece of cardboard or heavy paper from which to cut a template for your flower petals. You can substitute a piece of manila file folder cover or a 4 by 6 inch file card for the cardboard. You will need to purchase a role of green florist’s tape, some florist’s wire and a package of chenille pipe cleaners, preferably green. You will also need to purchase tissue paper in the colors you have chosen for your flowers and one package of dark green tissue paper for the leaves. Now you are ready to begin.

The first step is to make a template for your flowers and leaves. Draw two circles with a pencil on your piece of cardboard. The size of the circles will vary depending on what size flower blossom you wish to make. However, a good starting size would be approximately three inches in diameter. You could trace a circle around the base of a drinking glass or small jar. Next, within one of those circles draw a star. Try to find a picture of a star in a magazine and cut it out carefully to trace onto your cardboard, enlarging it if necessary; however, you can draw one yourself using the ruler. Now cut out the star. This will be your pattern. The second circle can be used to cut circles of tissue paper for the leaves and the petals of your flower. Cut a circle of green tissue paper for the leaves, and cut a stack of about seven or eight circles of colored tissue paper for your flowers. Using the star template, cut out a star from one circle of green tissue paper.

Pick up the star of green tissue paper and make a small, half inch slit in the center of the star. This will create an opening to insert the petals and the chenille pipe cleaner you will use as a stem. Next take a stack of circles of tissue paper in the color you have selected for your flower. Lay the star template on the stack of circles and trace the star. Carefully cut out the star shape from the stack of tissue circles. There is no need to do each one separately. Once cut, pick up the stack of tissue paper stars and fold the stack in half crosswise, and in half again. This will give you a pointy base. Press that point through the slit in the green leaf, and twist the leaf and the base of the petals together. Press a pipe cleaner into the base, and wrap with florists tape to secure the petals and the leaf to the stem. Next turn the flower upright and carefully begin to separate the layers of tissue paper, forming the petals. Separate them gently until all are fluffed up and separated, forming the flower. Sit back and admire your handiwork. Now make several more flowers to add to a pretty vase to make a bouquet for your table.
